Nanyi Mateo is a Spanish Medical Interpreter certified by the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). Since 2018, she’s been working as a video remote and over-the-phone medical interpreter as well as a quality assurance agent with multiple agencies across the United States. In 2020, she started teaching interpretation and note-taking for online interpreting schools in California and Chicago. She has presented her original note-taking language for national and international interpreting associations, such as the National Society of Translators and Interpreters of New Zealand (NZSTI), the Multilingual Consortium of the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE), and the staff interpreters of one of the UCLA Health Systems. She also founded her online interpreting community called InterpreMed to make high-quality study materials available to professional and aspiring medical interpreters all around the world.
Why Medical Interpreting?
From an early age, I was very interested in learning languages which was the subject I excelled at the most later on in my high school and college years. When I worked as a remote operator assisting interpreters, I was impressed with their language and intermediation skills, so I wanted to rise up to the challenge and help people at the same time. After long hours of intense self-study sessions and courses, I got my first job as a freelance medical interpreter. Since then, I’ve worked continuously on ensuring accurate and transparent communication and fulfilling healthcare providers’ and patients’ communicative needs in intercultural settings.
As a medical interpreter, I take great pleasure in helping people from all walks of life, oftentimes underserved communities, by giving them a voice and do justice to their right to be heard and understood. More than a job, interpreting is part of my identity which is built upon the values of solidarity and caring for somebody else’s health and quality of life. I feel grateful for being able to make a positive impact on patients’ wellbeing, working alongside healthcare providers, and bridging the language and cultural gaps to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities.
